The fear of making a mistake is the same fear which keeps us from trying new things. Mistakes own a place and role in one’s life the same way success does. Let’s take Sigmund Freud as an example. When he first published his scientific theories in front of the scientific community of Europe, he was booed, laughed at and rejected. Most theorists did not approve Freud’s theories. He had two options to choose from, either believe what the theorists did believe and quit his job or get back to his office. Sigmund Freud is the founding father of Psychoanalysis, one of the most important topics in the study of Psychology. Guess his choice.
Sometimes, it is very hard to accept a mistake especially if you are a type A. Perfectionism kills the joy of mistakes. Did I just write “the joy”? Yes. Mistakes are the path to success. They test our limits, personalities, strengths, thoughts and determination. Mistakes help us discover new physical and personality traits, while aiding us to be more in contact with our own selves and those around us.
One of the most common experiences during eating disorder’s recovery is a lapse. This is where the recovering sufferer experiences his or her eating disorder for a very short period of time. Feelings of guilt, failure and fear may arise once the sufferer becomes aware of one’s lapse. As most ED sufferers have a type A personality, they end up sporting feelings of shame due to their mistake and find it hard to accept the fact that mistakes are important experiences during ED recovery.

Mistakes give you the power and determination to keep on struggling. They offer you the ability to compare and think about your life and seek new ways how to improve it and make yourself live a better and more comfortable life. One of the most important reactions towards a mistake is forgiveness.
Mistakes help you understand that you are not made to be perfect, lead a perfect life or be a perfect wife/husband/sister/friend etc... Perfection does not offer improvement. Once you realize and accept the fact that you can perform a mistake, you can move forward. If you keep on pitying or harming yourself over what just had happened, you will be stuck in that moment. You have to get over your past in order to live the present and build a better future.
Do not let your mistakes rule your life. Try to seek ways how you can learn from what you have just experienced in order to improve yourself mentally and physically. Try not to listen to other’s judgement of your mistakes. You and ONLY YOU know your real feelings and thoughts. Do not let other’s opinion or behaviour influence your actions. You have the right to and capability of living and building a better life. If you play it safe, you will regret it later.
Learn, forgive, grow and move on.
