There are different types of depression including; bipolar disorder and clinical depression. What I will be talking about concerns clinical depression more than the other types of depression, but the symptoms and feelings are similar in most cases. Depression affects the mood along with the cognitive and physical function of the sufferer. It prevents oneself from doing normal daily activities and one starts to feel very pessimistic and hopeless.
Having a bad day or week is very common in our lives. The feelings of sadness and helplessness which accompany depressive disorders do not go away if treatment is not given. Depression affects one’s life and most of the time the sufferer quits his or her job, stops attending school, avoids social contact, experiences aches, pains headaches and other physical discomfort, one’s sleeping and eating patterns are disturbed, hobbies which one usually enjoys are no longer of enjoyment to the sufferer and one may even experience suicidal thoughts (some even attempt to act on those thoughts).

The causes behind depressive moods vary. The personality, genetics, environmental settings, one’s neurochemistry and experiences or traumas are amongst few of the factors which may lead to depression. A lot of people who suffer from eating disorders, go through depressive periods. EDs affect the brain’s neurochemistry and many sufferers experience mood changes. Many ED sufferers are also perfectionists and show signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) thus they are more prone to suffer from depression.
When one is depressed, one may feel as if he or she will never get out of their own mind’s imprisonment. Depression is treatable if the right therapy is given. Psychotherapy aids the sufferer to learn the cause of the depression. One session is not enough. Recovery from depression is a process. It may take years to overcome the struggles but it is possible to heal. Sometimes psychotherapy alone is not enough to cure the moods. Psychiatric therapy tends to be a taboo and sometimes people who seek medical help tend to feel ashamed. There is nothing wrong with trying to heal with medication. Psychological illnesses are as fatal as physical illnesses and they should be taken care of. Depression can lead to other bad habits such as substance abuse and binge drinking thus it needs to be medically addressed when it becomes severe. Medication is not a miracle cure. It will only work if lifestyle changes are applied. Sleep, exercise, adequate nutrition and positive thinking help to reduce the severity of the depression.

On a personal note, if you are feeling depressed or are currently receiving treatment, it is possible to feel better. There were times when I thought that I was doomed to feel depressed all my life. I thought I was alone and that I do not deserve to enjoy the beauty of life. After a lot of hard work and effort, I started going out more often, found a job, started studying again and I am taking care of myself more than ever. I am not where I want to be yet, but I am glad that I have overcome a lot of struggles and insecurities. No one will make you feel any better if you decide not to make yourself feel better first. You own your mind and soul and only you have the ability and power to change your future. Just close your eyes and assure yourself that everything is going to be much much much better and changes will surely start to take place. :)
