Do you ever think about the qualities and talents which you own? How many times do you ever take the time to praise yourself for accomplishing goals and overcoming obstacles? How often have you missed out on opportunities which you have longed for in order to please someone else and ended up sad for not doing something good for yourself? Are you proud and happy with who you are? If not, why so? Are there ways which can help you boost your self-respect and self-esteem?
In order to love and respect those around you, you must first and foremost acknowledge your self-worth. Yesterday’s therapy session made me realise that one of the factors which contributes to my ED is the lack of love and respect towards my own self. I love making those around me happy and sometimes in order to do so, I tend to sacrifice some of my “me-time” and end up feeling unhappy for not giving my self the attention which I need.

During my session, I had to talk about the qualities which I own and how they can help me love myself more. I got to admit that I never thought that I possess so many good qualities and at that moment I felt so proud and happy of whom I am.
Five minutes were all it took me to help me think about myself. Do you have some time to spare in order to think about yourself? Can you make time? How can you expect to feel confident, loved and happy if you abandon your own needs? Self-love is a natural action. Loving yourself does not mean that you are an egoistic and narcistic individual. It is important to not let our egos control our lives, but instead we should focus on getting to know ourselves better, this way we can take more care of ourselves thus we feel more comfortable in our own skin.
When you love yourself, you seek to surround yourself with more positive people and experiences. Positivity fills you with motivation and desire to do the activities which make you feel good, whilst helping to develop a healthy self-image perception of yourself thus boosting your confidence and self-esteem.
On the other hand, self-cruelty will cause you more harm than good. It tells you statements which are not true. Sometimes it make you believe that you are not good enough, worthy enough or strong enough to face life. It make you feel miserable if you do not act against it.
In response to the negativity depicted by self-cruelty, you might decide to give up on yourself, on your dreams and on those who showed trust and belief in you. Self-cruelty brings about shame. It threatens our safety and makes us punish ourselves. We become ashamed of our good qualities, talents, values, trust and other traits which make us feel good about ourselves.

My journey towards ED recovery is a learning experience. All our thoughts, inner and outer actions and perspectives reflect our lives. The way we act upon our own self affects the way we act with the people around us, so think of yourself as your best friend and whenever you are up to do something ask yourself, “If I were my best friend what would I tell him/her to do?” “If I were my best friend would I let him/her do that?” “How would I react?”. No one can love you more than you can love your own self. Treat yourself as best as you can, your body, mind and soul will thank you.
